Civil war and political break-up controversially saw qualified Yugoslavia lose their Euro ‘92 spot to Denmark 10 days before the tournament’s start in Sweden. Michael Laudrup of Swansea League Cup fame was arguably the Danes most formidable and dangerous player. At 28-years-old he was at the peak of his powers in the wake of winning the European Cup final as a member of Johan Cruyff’s Barcelona dream team.
In a drama France’s 2010 World Cup squad would be proud of, Michael and his brother Brian quit the national team two years prior due to tension with manager Richard Møller Nielsen reportedly over tactics. Nielsen performed his best Nick Fury impression and assembled a crack team of Danes. Brian coalesced and returned to the fray, while Michael opted to remain on holiday. With a team consisting of Laudrup, Peter Schmeichel, Henrik Larsen and thirteen players plying their trade in the newly-formed Danish Superliga, the Danes made their way to Sweden.
